Dean Moe Jones, Dean of Students and School Culture
Geffen Academy at UCLA’s annual Club Fair was held on September 6. There was an undeniable sense of student engagement and joy in the air. Students of all grade levels coursed all three floors of the building, searching for clubs that interested them. There were clubs ranging anywhere from Rubik’s Cube to Global Cuisine to Psychology to UFOs. There were Affinity Groups, Service Clubs, STEAM Clubs, Athletic Clubs, and more. It was definitely a sight to behold.
This is something that we cherish here at Geffen Academy at UCLA. We encourage student voice and student choice. Our students are the leads. They recruit, they organize, and they conduct their own meetings. Our advisors, in most cases, are merely the adults in the room.
It is almost impossible to find a student who was not enthralled by the glee of being able to explore your interests, especially the 6th graders. I heard from students as well as parents about their excitement that the new year has brought them. The Club Fair is an essential part of that excitement and is definitely one of our most celebrated traditions.
