In Search of The Golden Ratio: Advanced Research Students Visit the Hammer Museum

Dr. Ashforth’s Advanced Research class visited the Hammer Museum to analyze artwork in the context of the “Golden Ratio”. The visit was planned to demonstrate the interdisciplinary relationship between math and art.
The Golden ratio of 1:1.618 (or  1: φ) is based on a sequence of numbers known as the Fibonacci Sequence identified by mathematician Leonardo Bonacci around 1202. It has long been known to be the basis of how we subconsciously respond to some patterns in nature more positively than others. Our students presented their findings as “elevator pitches” as they continue developing their research communication skills – and will also hopefully look at art through a new lens moving forward!
