Elective Reading: An Essential Element to a Complete Education

One of the pillars Geffen Academy was founded on was the concept and practice of elective reading. Geffen Academy's Elective Reading program offers students the chance to read freely and for enjoyment, an essential element of a complete education. The program allows students to choose books based on their interests, as well as books that challenge them to learn about people, places, and perspectives "out of their comfort zone." Students read fifteen minutes in the morning, at the beginning of the school day, and are encouraged to read even more at home.
As a school that values feedback, we often send surveys to hear from our students and Educators about their experiences and how we can improve or adjust to the needs of the moment. The comments we have received from students over the past couple of years have been enlightening and reassuring. In a survey taken last fall, one Middle School student wrote, "It’s a very good start to the day and it’s also a great calming time before class starts." In the fall of 2022, an Upper School student wrote, "I think it's a good program. It definitely got me reading more and helped me to find some stories I definitely wouldn't have learned about otherwise." Another student wrote, "It is nice to read in the morning and can help you write better and expand your vocabulary. It is nice to set aside a time where you can read.” One of our school-wide learning goals is to foster persistent inquiry and thinkers and creators. Elective reading is vital to this mission and is a special piece of our academic mission.
