Geffen Academy Engineering and Design Students at Work

At the start of the school year, Campus Operations Manager Mike Strazzeri had a problem to solve. A tiny part that bolts together our outdoor chairs had seen better days after seven years of sunshine and steady use. More than one part had broken or cracked and the replacement part cost $50 each. He reached out to I-Track Educator Stefan Grunspan and asked Mr. Grunspan if he could use the 3D printers at Geffen Academy to come up with a part that was durable but also less expensive.
After working through his own prototype, Mr. Grunspan decided to pose this design challenge to his Advanced Engineering and Design students when they returned to school.

This past month, students in Mr. Grunspan's class have been disassembling the chairs, measuring the part needed, creating prototypes and then testing their durability on the re-assembled chairs. The students are using a sophisticated design program - Autodesk Fusion - to create their designs and are close to solving the problem. Their first prototypes did not properly fit but were not far off. Mr. Grunspan is confident his students will have more success with their second prototypes and have a lasting solution for Mr. Strazzeri and all of us at Geffen Academy.
