CSI: Ancient Rome
Become an investigator of the past in this class! Learn about ancient life through death, i.e., through the real artifacts left by people from the past. You’ll learn how to decode inscriptions on tombstones currently on view at the Getty Villa, as well as use Latin formulas to create new dedications. We’ll also learn how catastrophes like the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE yielded tons of information for us today about the actual daily lives of people across society. Students will practice thinking like historians and archaeologists in a fun way, asking what objects can reveal about identity, family, social status, and belief.
